Wednesday, December 21, 2011 8 PM

Please Attend. We are counting on each other!
As a result of the tremendous spike in burglaries and armed robberies in our community, a community-wide meeting on crime is being held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 8 PM at Young Israel, 990 NE 171st Street, NMB, FL.We will discuss actions we can take to make the community safer in the short term and the long term. We will also ask our elected officials to actively take a leadership role in reducing the number of access points to our community.Police officials and elected officials have been invited and many have already called to say they will attend or will send a representative from their office. Some of the officials have already offered assistance in advance of the meeting. There is strength in numbers. Please make every effort to come so that the officials will recognize we concerned and united.

The majority of my mailing list goes to the Jewish Community, but the meeting is open to the entire community so please spread the news of the meeting to all of your neighbors in person and by email.

The following Rabbis consider this gathering important and encourage your attendance:

Rabbi Ephraim Leizerson

Join with your neighbors and send a quick email.

Please take a moment and email them a quick note if you have not done so yet.

At a minimum, please include these three points in your letter:

Miami police shootings subject of panel hearing

24 Mar

The Associated Press

MIAMI – Seven recent fatal shootings of African-American suspects by Miami police officers is the subject of a hearing at the city commission.

Family members of those killed and community activists are expected Thursday to air their concerns at the meeting. Some claim officers are too aggressive and often too prone to shoot.

Police Chief Miguel Exposito says the confrontations have resulted from a crackdown on violent crime on inner-city neighborhoods long plagued by drugs, gangs and murders. Exposito says in most cases officers are protecting their own lives or the lives of others.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has asked the U.S. Justice Department to open a civil rights probe. Wilson is concerned that black suspects are treated with greater violence than those of other races.

On Violence in Miami

28 Dec

Violence in Miami

When is this going to stop? Ciara Lee, her son, Devin Franklin, and their family are just the latest victims in a terrifying history of violence, death and destroyed lives of Miami residents. Are Miami neighborhoods turning into the drug gang terrorism that plagues Mexico?

Fred Grimm is correct about Second Amendment absolutists who equate military assault weapons with hunting rifles (No excuse for this kind of firepower, Dec. 16 Local & State section). Faulty questions: Why did gunmen shoot at the wrong house? Why did the student bring a gun to school? The appropriate questions are: Why do gangs have assault rifles? Why do children have access to guns?

Are Miami-Dade County law enforcement agencies inept, understaffed or out-gunned? How do we change this awful reality of the killing of innocent residents? Maybe people in safe, comfortable neighborhoods need to shift priorities. Miami-Dade is economically polarized. People with power and resources seem to be ignoring the suffering happening just a few miles away. It’s time to take action for the greater good. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes and trust that law enforcement is doing a good job.

Report: Fla. has 1,403 gangs with 56,200 members

The Associated Press

Florida’s first gang census shows the state has 1,403 documented gangs with 56,200 members, associates and suspected members. That’s nearly the population of the city of Homestead.

Attorney General Bill McCollum released his annual Gang Reduction Strategy Report on Wednesday. For the first time it includes gang statistics from all 67 Florida counties.

McCollum said the survey will help Florida’s fight against gang activity because it’ll serve as a baseline for measuring future results.

Since the gang reduction strategy began in 2007 the statewide prosecutor’s office has charged more than 170 gang members. About 110 of those defendants have received sentences totaling more than 950 years in prison.
