Florida’s first gang census shows the state has 1,403 documented gangs with 56,200 members, associates and suspected members. That’s nearly the population of the city of Homestead.
Attorney General Bill McCollum released his annual Gang Reduction Strategy Report on Wednesday. For the first time it includes gang statistics from all 67 Florida counties.
McCollum said the survey will help Florida’s fight against gang activity because it’ll serve as a baseline for measuring future results.
Since the gang reduction strategy began in 2007 the statewide prosecutor’s office has charged more than 170 gang members. About 110 of those defendants have received sentences totaling more than 950 years in prison.
